Field Note 04

Decisions · Consequences

Small Deviation. Compound Consequences.

Ten minutes became forty-five.

Contemplation & Thought

Ten minutes.

That's how much later than usual I left the house to take Zelik to school.

A familiar drive. A familiar route. Just ten minutes behind schedule.

Approaching the bridge, traffic came to a crawl. A stalled vehicle had created a backup where I normally encountered none.

Further along, entering I-5, another slowdown. This time, a minor collision.

Two unexpected delays.

And I began to wonder whether I would have encountered either one had I left at my usual time.

After dropping Zelik off, I headed home.

A third disruption. A more serious collision. Traffic was stop-and-go.

By the time I returned, my ten-minute delay had become thirty. The rest of my morning was now thirty to forty-five minutes off schedule.

What fascinated me wasn't the traffic.

It was the accumulation.

Three unrelated incidents. None caused by me. None within my control.

Yet all three became part of my morning.

Had I left ten minutes earlier, would my experience have been different?

Perhaps. Perhaps not.

It made me consider how easily we dismiss small deviations.

A postponed conversation. A delayed decision. An exception to a routine.

At the moment, each seems insignificant.

But decisions don't exist in isolation. They intersect with circumstances already unfolding around us.

And sometimes, the consequences bear little resemblance to the size of the original decision.

Not every deviation leads to a loss. Some lead to unexpected opportunities. Others change nothing at all.

We rarely know which until afterward.

That morning, ten minutes became forty-five.

Small Deviation. Compound Consequences.
